The Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s School of Hotel and Tourism Management is accepting applications for its PhD programme for September 2027 entry, with fellowship and scholarship opportunities available.
The full-time programme normally takes three years and prepares graduates for research and teaching careers in hospitality and tourism. It combines advanced research training with opportunities to develop specialised investigations and share findings through publications, conferences and seminars.
Applicants normally need a bachelor’s degree and an MPhil or equivalent research degree, with at least one qualification in hospitality, tourism or a closely related field. Two years of work experience, including at least one year of industry or relevant experience, are required; exceptional admission may be considered. Application materials include academic records, a CV, two academic references, a personal statement and a research proposal of 1,200–1,800 words, excluding references. English-language requirements also apply.
Funding opportunities include the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS). Successful recipients receive a monthly stipend and research travel support, alongside PolyU benefits including additional cash awards, a tuition fee waiver for the normal study period and guaranteed university accommodation for two years. Other PolyU scholarships may also be available.
HKPFS applicants must submit applications to both the Research Grants Council and PolyU by December 1, 2026, with respective deadlines of 12:00 noon and 23:59 Hong Kong time. A separate route through designated faculty research projects closes on January 15, 2027, at 23:59 Hong Kong time, and requires prior faculty consent.
Full requirements and application instructions are available on the official programme admissions page.
