Academic News

The University of Cape Town’s Africa Climate Collaborative is inviting applications for ten fully funded, three-year postdoctoral research fellowships in climate and development. Applications close on October 29, 2026, at 23:00 South African Standard Time.

Fellows will receive an annual tax-free stipend of ZAR 380,000. An additional ZAR 130,000 over the three-year period is available, subject to justification, for relocation, medical insurance, research expenses and conference participation.

The programme combines research under an experienced UCT mentor with structured professional development and peer learning. Fellows will be based in their primary mentor’s department or research laboratory.

One project directly relevant to tourism will examine how African surf destinations and local surf economies can adapt to climate change. It will investigate changing surfing conditions, community dependence on surf tourism and adaptation options. Candidates need relevant training or experience in climate science, oceanography, physical geography or related fields, alongside strong data-analysis skills.

Eligibility is restricted to citizens of African countries, including those living abroad. The programme targets researchers within 36 months of completing their PhD, with qualifications appropriate to their chosen topic. Preference will be given to applicants under 35 years of age on February 1, 2027. Each candidate may apply for only one of the eleven advertised research topics.

Application documents include a CV with referee details, a writing sample, academic transcripts, a motivation letter and identification. Submissions must be completed through the online application form.

Full research descriptions and eligibility requirements are available in the official fellowship announcement.
