Buenos Aires to Host UN Tourism Rural Development Conference and Best Tourism Villages Ceremony

News from the Industry

Buenos Aires, Argentina, will host the 2nd Tourism for Rural Development Conference on 10–11 December 2026, alongside the Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism 2026 Ceremony and Network Meeting.

The gathering will highlight rural communities using tourism to support sustainable development. The villages receiving the 2026 recognition will be announced during the ceremony, which Argentine authorities have scheduled for 10 December.

The Best Tourism Villages initiative recognises rural destinations that protect their cultural and natural heritage, maintain community values and demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. Applications are assessed across nine areas, including economic, social and environmental sustainability, tourism governance, infrastructure and the conservation of cultural resources.

Alongside the recognition programme, UN Tourism operates an Upgrade Programme offering support to selected villages seeking to improve their tourism development practices. Its international village network provides opportunities to exchange experiences, share practical knowledge and develop cooperation among rural destinations.

The Buenos Aires event will combine the conference and recognition ceremony with a meeting of this network, placing rural communities and their contribution to sustainable tourism at the centre of the gathering.
