The announcement by Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD that it will establish a production facility in the Turkish province of Manisa has also revived discussions about the possibility of creating a Chinatown in the region, similar to those found in many major cities around the world.
Chinatowns serve not only as cultural and commercial centers for Chinese communities but also as popular tourist attractions where visitors can experience Chinese traditions, cuisine, and heritage. Around the world, these districts have become important destinations for both local residents and international travelers.
The Idea Emerged in Manisa
The first proposal for establishing a Chinatown in Türkiye came from the late Ferdi Zeyrek, Mayor of Manisa Metropolitan Municipality. The idea was inspired by expectations that approximately 2,500 Chinese employees, together with their families, would relocate to Manisa to work at the planned BYD factory.
At the time, Zeyrek publicly stated:
“I want BYD’s spending to remain in Manisa. I am working on creating new living spaces, including a Chinese street. As an architect, I believe I have the professional background to help turn this vision into reality.”
However, following his untimely death after an accident, the project remained unfinished.
Karşıyaka Also Expresses Interest
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Karşıyaka Mayor B. Yıldız Ünsal has also begun exploring the possibility of establishing a Chinatown in Karşıyaka, one of İzmir’s most vibrant districts.
Known for its rich social and cultural life, Karşıyaka is considered a suitable location for such a project. Supporters argue that a Chinatown could add a new dimension to the district’s urban identity while attracting visitors from neighboring provinces. The area’s established restaurant scene and culinary culture could further strengthen its appeal as a gastronomic destination.
According to local sources, Mayor Ünsal has discussed the project with representatives from various political parties and reportedly received positive feedback. Meetings are also expected with Chinese businesspeople and representatives of the Turkish Chinese Business Association. Suggestions from Dr. Selim Sarıibrahimoğlu, Board Member of the Honorary Consuls Association of Türkiye and partner at Sarıibrahimoğlu Law Office, are also said to be under consideration.
