Academic News

Parks and Leisure Australia, in partnership with Kids Safe NSW, will hold a “Playground and Playspace Safety” webinar on October 22, 2026, scheduled for 1:00–2:00 p.m. Australian Central Daylight Time (ACDT).

The online session will examine how playground planning, design, inspection and maintenance can support safe, inclusive and engaging play environments. A central focus will be balancing safety requirements with the developmental benefits of challenging and creative play.

Presenters will be Christine Erskine, Executive Officer of Kids Safe NSW, and Kim Cooke, Manager of its Playground Advisory Unit. Topics include safety standards, common hazards, risk–benefit assessment, maintenance systems, inspection documentation and inclusive design. Practical examples will illustrate approaches to managing risk throughout a playspace’s lifecycle.

The webinar is aimed at parks and recreation professionals, planners, landscape architects, asset managers, safety officers and contractors involved in delivering or maintaining public playspaces. Expert presentations will be followed by a live question-and-answer session.

Participation is free for PLA members. The non-member fee is AUD35, excluding GST. Registration is available through the event website.
