The journal Sustainability is accepting submissions for a special issue titled “Sustainable Horizons: The Futures of Heritage, Culture, and Tourism”, with a manuscript deadline of 31 August 2027.
Guest edited by Professor Gehan Selim and Dr Meng Li of the University of Leeds, UK, the issue welcomes original research, conceptual contributions and literature reviews. Particular attention is given to the Global South and approaches that connect heritage protection, community participation and sustainable tourism.
Topics include artificial intelligence and digital twins in heritage conservation, immersive technologies in museum education, Indigenous-led regenerative tourism, and the preservation of cultural memory and identity. Contributions may also examine recovery after crises, overtourism, cultural commodification, conservation governance and connections with the Sustainable Development Goals.
The issue seeks interdisciplinary perspectives on how destinations and heritage institutions can respond to climate change, geopolitical disruption and technological transformation while supporting local communities.
Manuscripts should be submitted through MDPI’s online system. Submissions passing initial checks undergo single-anonymised peer review, and accepted articles are published on a rolling basis. The special issue page lists an article processing charge of CHF 2,400 for open-access publication.
