Tourism and Hospitality Invites Papers on the Challenges and Future of Dark Tourism

Academic News

Tourism and Hospitality, MDPI’s open access journal, is accepting manuscripts for the special issue “Dark Tourism, Challenges, Opportunities and Limitations: Present and Future.” The submission deadline is 20 November 2026.

The issue is edited by Professor Maximiliano Korstanje, whose listed affiliations include the University of Palermo in Argentina and CERS at the University of Leeds, UK.

Researchers in tourism and the social sciences are invited to contribute theoretical and empirical studies examining dark tourism and thanatourism. Central questions concern how these forms of tourism are defined, what motivates visitors, and which research methods can best explain experiences associated with death, disaster, grief and trauma.

The collection also encourages consideration of dark tourism’s future amid changing and uncertain global conditions.

Research articles, reviews and short communications are welcome. Submissions passing initial editorial screening undergo single-anonymised peer review, with accepted articles published progressively online.

The listed article processing charge is CHF 1,400. Authors planning a submission may send a title and an abstract of approximately 250 words to the editorial office for preliminary assessment.

Full details are available on the special issue webpage.
