Ulster University is inviting applications for “Equipped for Adulthood,” a funded PhD investigating how therapeutic recreation supports life skills and self-management among young adults with serious illness. Applications close at 4:00 p.m. on 8 January 2027.

The project evaluates Barretstown’s Young Adult Programme for people aged 18–24, examining independence, social connections, wellbeing and preparation for employment through mixed-methods research.

Applicants normally need a relevant first-class or upper-second-class honours degree; equivalent qualifications may also be considered.

Scholarship eligibility is restricted to UK or Irish nationals, applicants with settled or pre-settled status, or those with indefinite leave to remain or enter. Applicants must also meet the requirement for three years’ preceding residence in the EEA, Switzerland, UK or Gibraltar.

The preferred start date is 13 September 2027. Enquiries can be directed to Dr Ellen Henderson at e.henderson1@ulster.ac.uk.
