Muzaffer Uysal

Tourism and Hospitality Scholars

Prof. Muzaffer Uysal is a distinguished scholar in the fields of tourism and hospitality management. He has made significant contributions to tourism research through an extensive body of scholarly publications and has received more than 50,000 citations. Throughout his academic career, he has participated in numerous externally funded research projects and has presented papers and delivered seminars in more than 25 countries. He is among the founding members of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism and the founding editor of Tourism Analysis: An Interdisciplinary Journal. He has also served as an editor and editorial board member for several leading tourism journals, including Annals of Tourism Research and the Journal of Travel Research.

Muzaffer Uysal was born in Çorum, Türkiye, in 1954. He completed his primary education in Osmancık and his secondary education in Çorum. He graduated from the Ankara Academy of Economics and Commercial Sciences in 1977. Following graduation, he was awarded a government scholarship under Law No. 1416 to pursue graduate studies in the United States. He earned his master's degree from the University of New Haven in 1982 and completed his Ph.D. at Texas A&M University in 1984.

He began his academic career at Clemson University, where he served as Assistant Professor (1985–1988) and Associate Professor (1988–1991) in the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management. In 1992, he joined the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) as an Associate Professor and was promoted to Full Professor in 1994. During 2007–2008, he served as Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and Research at the University of South Carolina. Between 2008 and 2016, he held an academic appointment in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech. In 2016, he was appointed Head of the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management at the Isenberg School of Management, University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Known internationally as "Muzzo" among colleagues and in academic circles, Uysal's research has focused primarily on tourism development, the socioeconomic impacts of tourism, and quality of life in tourism and hospitality. He has taught courses on tourism policy and planning, tourism research methods, and tourism impacts. Throughout his career, he has received more than 30 academic awards. Among the most notable are the John Wiley & Sons Lifetime Research Achievement Award (2016), the Leslie Reid Outstanding Alumni Award from Texas A&M University (2016), the Emerald Citation of Excellence Award (2016), the Michael D. Olsen Research Achievement Award from the University of Delaware (2009), and the China Tourism Research Lifetime Achievement Award (2008).

According to a global assessment of tourism research productivity covering the period 1985–2005, Uysal ranked as the fourth most prolific tourism scholar worldwide. His name also appeared in every edition (2005–2009) of Who's Who, a biographical directory recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to science in the United States. He currently resides in the United States, where he continues his academic work. He is a member of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism and the Academy of Leisure Sciences.
