Houses of Zile
NATURAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE Türkiye Destination Religious Buildings and Sites
(Zile, Tokat, Türkiye)
The Houses of Zile are historic residences in the Zile district of Tokat Province, Türkiye, many of which date to the nineteenth century. They represent Ottoman domestic architecture and the traditional Turkish house, providing evidence of local building practices, household organization, and everyday life.
Municipal tourism publications have estimated the number of historic houses in Zile at approximately 3,500. Amasya Street, one of the town’s historic thoroughfares, contains notable examples of this residential heritage. Architectural studies describe the traditional urban fabric, commonly associated with “Eski Zile” (Old Zile), as extending across approximately fifteen neighborhoods. This historic area includes protected streets and buildings within the town’s designated urban conservation area.
The houses reflect the relationship between domestic life and the surrounding neighborhood. Many stand directly alongside neighboring buildings, creating a continuous street frontage, although detached examples also survive. Their arrangement, entrances, and projecting upper floors contribute to the character of the streetscape. Together with Zile Castle and the historic commercial area around Uzun Çarşı (Long Bazaar), these residences form an important part of the town’s architectural setting.
Construction methods reflect local materials, environmental conditions, and building traditions. Stone was used in foundations and lower sections, while timber framing with adobe infill was common above. The distribution of materials varies between buildings. Lower floors frequently accommodated storage and service functions, while upper floors contained the principal living spaces. Rooms were commonly arranged around a shared hall, known as a sofa, which provided circulation and space for household activities. Both interior-hall and central-hall layouts occur, indicating variation within the local residential tradition. Projecting upper-storey bays, known as cumba, enlarged interior spaces and provided views along the street.
Fire, natural disasters, deterioration, and neglect have damaged parts of this architectural heritage. Conservation initiatives have included the restoration of individual houses and improvements to historic streets. Some restored residences have been adapted for cultural and community uses. Sarı Hafız Mansion has featured in municipal initiatives to establish a culture and arts house associated with local handicrafts and regional products. Gaydaroğlu Mansion has been restored and opened as a culture and arts center, providing courses in music, handicrafts, and visual arts. These projects illustrate how historic residences can accommodate new activities while retaining their architectural significance.
The houses of Zile contribute to the cultural tourism appeal of Tokat through their architecture, streetscapes, and associations with local life. Their heritage value lies in both individual buildings and the relationships among houses, streets, and communal spaces. Conservation and compatible reuse can support the continuity of this historic environment while enabling residents and visitors to engage with the town’s domestic and cultural heritage.
